Why most parental controls never get finished

The usual setup asks you to make thirty decisions before it protects anything: which categories to block, how many hours is reasonable, what time bedtime should start, which apps matter.

Every one of those is a question you'd have to research to answer properly. So most parents either abandon it halfway or accept defaults they haven't understood — and then aren't sure what's actually switched on.

We made the age the only question, because the age is the one thing you already know.

The three steps

1. Add your child — name and age.
2. Pick the profile — Elementary (5-10), Pre-Teen (11-15) or Teen (16-17).
3. Install the app on their device.

Everything applies at once: daily limits, bedtime, the blocked web categories, app rules and limits, and Safe Search enforcement across all five major search engines.

What each profile actually sets

On the content side:

• All three block the same 14 harmful web categories — adult content, mature content, profanity, violence, illegal activity, drugs, gambling, dating, hate speech, proxies and VPNs, and browser gaming.
• Elementary and Pre-Teen additionally block social media, private messaging and forums. Their web rules are otherwise identical; what changes between them is time, not content.
• Teen opens social media and messaging with activity visible to you, and caps social apps at an hour a day.
• Games are limited to an hour a day at every age, and the Restricted app category — dating, gambling, vault apps, VPNs and around 260 others — is blocked at every age.

The daily limits are deliberately generous, because they cover the whole device including schoolwork. Phone, Messages, Clock, Calculator and Maps keep working through every restriction.

The defaults are a starting point, not a decision

Every single rule can be changed afterwards, one tap each. Extend bedtime by half an hour at weekends, allow one app that's blocked by category, whitelist your child's tuition platform — none of it requires starting over.

And when your child moves up an age bracket, switch the profile and everything updates together. You're not reconfiguring twenty settings by hand every couple of years.

Most parents change one or two things in the first fortnight and nothing after that.

Who this suits

If you've been putting parental controls off because it looked like an evening's work, this removes that. You don't need to have an opinion about how many web categories a nine-year-old should have blocked — that's the part we've already done.

It's particularly worth it with more than one child, since each gets their own profile and their own rules without any of it interfering.

Frequently asked questions

My child is between profiles.
Pick the younger one for more protection or the older one for more freedom, and switch if it's wrong. A mature 10-year-old often does better on Pre-Teen; an 11-year-old who needs more structure does better on Elementary.

Can I change profile later?
Yes, one tap, and every rule updates immediately.

What if the defaults are too strict?
Change them. The profile is a sensible floor, not a lock — and if you find yourself fighting a rule daily, that rule is wrong for your family and should be adjusted rather than endured.

Do I set each child up separately?
Yes, but it's the same two minutes each, and their rules are independent.

Does it work on iPhone?
Yes — web filtering, Safe Search, app blocking and time rules all work on iOS. Reporting which apps were used is Android-only, because Apple doesn't allow it.

Will my child know?
Yes. There's no hidden mode, deliberately.
