How to Block Apps When Your Child Uses Your Phone

By ParentalEdge TeamMar 3, 20265 min read

The Problem: Your Phone, Their Entertainment

You hand your child your phone for homework. Five minutes later, they are watching YouTube shorts, scrolling Instagram, or playing games. You take the phone back, they ask again in an hour, and the cycle repeats.

You cannot uninstall these apps because you use them yourself. You cannot set permanent restrictions because it is your phone. You need a way to temporarily block everything except what they need — and then restore your phone to normal when they are done.

The Solution: One-Tap Study Mode

ParentalEdge's Study Mode lets you block all non-essential apps with a single tap before handing your phone to your child. Here is exactly how it works.

What Gets Blocked

When Study Mode is active, every app on your phone is blocked except the ones you specifically allow. Your child sees a lock screen when they try to open anything not on the list.

What You Can Allow

You choose which apps stay accessible. Common choices:

  • Homework apps: Google Classroom, Vedantu, Unacademy, BYJU'S, Khan Academy
  • Learning tools: Duolingo, Quizlet, Google Translate, Calculator
  • Research: Chrome or any browser (with Safe Search enforced)
  • Communication: Phone and Messages (so they can call you if needed)

How to Enable Study Mode

  1. Open ParentalEdge on your phone
  2. Tap Study Mode
  3. Enter your 4-digit PIN
  4. Select the apps your child needs
  5. Hand over the phone

That is it. Takes about 5 seconds.

How to Disable Study Mode

Enter your PIN again. Your phone returns to normal instantly. All your apps work as before.

Auto-Timeout Safety Net

Forgot to turn off Study Mode? It automatically deactivates after 4 hours. Your phone will not stay locked accidentally.

Why Not Just Use Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing?

Android's Digital Wellbeing and Apple's Screen Time let you set daily time limits on apps. But they have two problems for shared phones:

  1. They restrict YOU too. If you set a 30-minute limit on YouTube, it applies to your usage as well.
  2. They are always on. You cannot toggle restrictions on and off quickly when handing the phone to your child.

ParentalEdge's Study Mode is designed for exactly this scenario: temporary, one-tap restrictions that only apply when your child is using the phone.

What About Harmful Content?

Even when Study Mode is off, ParentalEdge blocks 7 categories of harmful content in the background — including adult content, violence, gambling, and dating apps. Safe Search is also enforced across Google, Bing, and other search engines. This protection runs at all times, regardless of whether Study Mode is active.

Real Scenario: Homework Time

6:00 PM — Your daughter needs the phone for a science project.

  1. You open ParentalEdge, tap Study Mode, enter PIN
  2. Allow Google Classroom, Chrome, Calculator, and YouTube (educational)
  3. Hand over the phone

6:45 PM — She finishes and returns the phone.

  1. You enter your PIN to disable Study Mode
  2. Your phone is back to normal

No arguments about "just five more minutes on Instagram." Instagram was never available to begin with.
