When Your Child Does Homework on Your Phone: Lock It First

By ParentalEdge Team•Oct 7, 2026•4 min read

Short answer: ParentalEdge is built for a child’s own phone, tablet or Mac. If your child does homework on your Android phone, you need something different: a lock you switch on before you hand the phone over and switch off with a PIN when you take it back. Our sister app, FocusEdge, does exactly that.

In many Indian homes the child does not have a phone. The teacher’s worksheet arrives on your WhatsApp, the class uses Google Classroom, and the only screen in the house at 6pm is yours.

So you hand it over. On that phone are YouTube, Instagram, your games, your photos, your chats, GPay and PhonePe. “I’m doing homework” is true for about ten minutes.

Why a parental control app is the wrong tool here

Parental control apps, ParentalEdge included, are set up on the child’s device. They assume the device belongs to the child all day: a daily limit, a bedtime, a homework window, a report for the parent.

Put that on your own phone and it limits you. Your YouTube is blocked at 9pm. Your browsing lands in a report. That is not what you wanted.

What you need on your own phone is simpler. One switch. On when the child has the phone, off when you do.

What your phone already has

App pinning. Android can pin one app to the screen until you unpin it. It is free and it is already there. It holds one app only, so it fails the moment homework needs Classroom and a browser and a PDF.

Kids mode. Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi and others ship a kids mode. It is free too. You have to remember to turn it on, and the browser is usually all or nothing: every website, or none.

Both are worth trying first. If homework is one app for twenty minutes, pinning is enough.

What FocusEdge adds

FocusEdge is a separate app from the same team that makes ParentalEdge. It is made for one job: your phone, lent to your child, for homework.

  • Study Mode. You choose the study apps and websites once. Turn Study Mode on, and only those open. No games, no Reels, no YouTube.
  • Your PIN turns it off. Settings and the Play Store stay locked while it is on, and the notification panel stays closed, so your messages stay yours.
  • Adult and unsafe websites stay blocked all the time, even when Study Mode is off. That covers the evening the phone was on the table and you did not get to the switch.
  • Study websites, not the whole internet. The browser opens the sites on your list, such as NCERT, DIKSHA or Khan Academy. Everything else shows a block page.
  • It does not watch what you do. The blocking happens on the phone. Which apps and websites were opened is never recorded or sent.

It is for Android phones only. It is not available for iPhone.

If YouTube is the main problem in your house, FocusEdge has a short guide on blocking YouTube during homework, and another on what the kids mode on Samsung, Vivo and Redmi phones can and cannot do.

Which one do you need?

FocusEdge ParentalEdge
Whose device Your own Android phone Your child’s phone, tablet or Mac
How it works You switch Study Mode on, and off with a PIN Rules run on a schedule you set once
What is recorded How long Study Mode was on each day. Never which apps or websites were opened Websites visited and searches on the child’s device

Some families use both: FocusEdge on a parent’s phone for the younger child, ParentalEdge on the older child’s own phone. If your teen has their own Android, the homework hours are better handled with a lock window on their phone.

Set it up tonight

  1. Install FocusEdge from Google Play on your phone.
  2. Choose the study apps and websites, and set a PIN only you know.
  3. Turn on Study Mode and hand the phone over.
  4. Enter your PIN when homework is done. Your phone is as you left it.
