Family Link After 13: What Still Works on Android in India (and What to Add)

You may hear that Google Family Link “stops at 13” and start shopping. That is the wrong panic.

Family Link still works after 13. Google’s own help says you can keep supervision on a teen account, and as of 2026 a teen needs parent approval to stop it until 18. If you want Family Link on, you can leave it on. Check Google’s current Family Link pages before you treat any of that as frozen — they have changed this before.

The real question after 13 is not “does Family Link exist?” It is “is the free basic layer enough for a teen on Android in India?” For many houses, yes. For some, no. The rest of this piece is that split, without dressing ParentalEdge up as the only option.

Family Link is good at the basics

Use it. Keep it. Do not rip it out to “switch apps.”

On a child’s Android, Family Link is still the right tool for:

• Approving or blocking Play Store installs
• A daily screen-time limit, and limits on individual apps
• Downtime / School Time
• YouTube content levels and Restricted Mode on a supervised Google account — with a 13-year-old caveat, below
• SafeSearch on Google, in Chrome
• A location pin on Google’s map
• Who can call and text (approved contacts) — ParentalEdge does not do this
• A remote lock

If your Class 8 child mostly uses a handful of apps, does not live in a second browser, and you only need “this app is allowed, this one is not, stop at 8pm,” Family Link may be the whole answer. It is free. It is built into Android. That is a real advantage.

You can also add supervision to a Google account the teen already created. You do not have to have started Family Link when they were nine.

What still does not work after 13

Age is not the gap. These are.

Chrome-only web filtering. Family Link’s site blocks and SafeSearch apply in Chrome. Firefox, Brave, Opera, Samsung Internet, or a link opened inside another app, are a different story. A teen who wants an unfiltered window does not need a hacker forum. They need a second browser.

YouTube supervision is the one thing that does end at 13. Family Link supervision itself holds — that is the January 2026 change, and a teen needs your approval to stop it until 18. YouTube is a separate system and it did not change. A supervised teen's YouTube experience lives in Family Center, where Google's own help says supervision “can be removed at any point by a parent or a teen.” The content levels and the daily Shorts feed limit are not in the supervised-teen control set either — those are controls for accounts under 13. So the YouTube filter you set at 12 is not the one you have at 13. Check it on the account in front of you rather than assuming it carried over.

You see time, not YouTube. Family Link will tell you YouTube ran for an hour. It will not show the titles. On Android, ParentalEdge can show YouTube video titles and channels, including Shorts. That is the difference between “YouTube: 1 hour” and a conversation about what filled the hour. Titles are Android. Do not expect the same on iPhone or Mac.

No iPhone child. Family Link has a parent app on iOS. It does not supervise an iPhone or iPad the way it supervises Android. If one child is on Android and another is on iPhone, Family Link cannot be the one dashboard. ParentalEdge has a child app on iOS. Web filtering and time rules can apply there. YouTube title history still should not be promised on iOS.

Nothing is blocked until you block it. Family Link will not arrive with Indian betting apps, vault apps, or loan apps already off. You find them, you block them, one by one. That is fine if you know the names. It is slow if you do not.

No homework-shaped lock with an allowlist, unless you build it by hand. Family Link gives you a daily bucket and a Downtime window. It is not the same as “5pm to 11pm, ChatGPT and school work stay open, YouTube and PUBG do not.” Some families do not need that. One parent in Kerala did, on a teen Android, paid with UPI, and used a scheduled lock for exactly that.

Do not take that Kerala house and turn it into “this is what happens after 13 in India.” It is one setup.

Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo

People will tell you Family Link “dies on MIUI.” I am not going to claim that. Family Link is a Google service; on a lot of phones it is more stubborn than a third-party app. Battery optimisation can still hurt any app, including ParentalEdge. If you install anything extra, go through unrestricted battery and autostart for that phone. If Family Link is already running stably on your Redmi or Realme, leave it.

What ParentalEdge adds — and what it does not

After 13, a teen is still a teen

In India, Class 8–12 is when YouTube, WhatsApp, and a second browser become the actual day, not a side habit. Family Link’s basics still help. They do not automatically become enough.

If the only new problem at 13 is “I don’t want them to switch Family Link off,” Google’s current rule is that they need your approval until 18. Confirm that in Family Link before you buy anything. If the new problem is “they left Chrome” or “I still don’t know what that YouTube hour was,” that is a product gap, not an age cutoff.
