How to Set Up Your iPad for Your Child (Single Device Family)

The Situation

Your iPad is signed into your Apple ID. You want to set it up for your child with proper parental controls — but it's your only Apple device.

Step 1: Create Your Child's Apple ID

On the iPad (while signed into your Apple ID):

1. Go to Settings → Family
2. Tap Add Member → Create Child Account
3. Enter child's name and correct birthday (this sets age restrictions)
4. Create their Apple ID (use any email or create a new @icloud.com)
5. Set a password for their account

Your child is now in your Family Sharing group.

Step 2: Switch to Child's Account

1. Go to Settings → tap your name at top
2. Tap Sign Out (keep a copy of contacts/calendar if asked)
3. Back in Settings, tap Sign in to your iPad
4. Enter your child's Apple ID and password

The iPad is now your child's device.

What Screen Time Won't Cover

Your child's iPad now has Screen Time's basic protections — daily app limits and adult website blocking. But Screen Time doesn't filter gambling, violence, or dating sites, won't show you what websites your child visited or searched for, and won't alert you when something gets blocked.
